Mental Skills Separate Top Baseball Players: Andy McKay

What makes some top baseball players better than other equally-gifted athletes? Their mental skills.
Sacramento City College baseball coach Andy McKay will discuss these mental aspects as part of the Sacramento Area Baseball Coaches Clinic on Saturday, Jan. 14.

The clinic takes place at the Croatian-American Cultural Center, 3770 Auburn Blvd, Sacramento. The cost is $25 if registering before Jan. 1. Click here to register.

McKay s talk will focus is not on the physical  aspects of baseball, but the mental. Combining sports psychology and motivation, McKay said coaches need to prepare their players minds, not just their bodies, to succeed.

As an athlete moves up in the ranks it becomes tougher to distance yourself from other players on physical ability alone, McKay said. The mental game always separates one athlete from another.
Elite performers are able to maintain their focus regardless of the situation, regardless if the game is close, a blowout or they are winning or losing, he explained.

Mental skills, like physical ones, need to be developed over time. Coaches who attend the Sacramento Area Baseball Coaches Clinic will learn how to coach the mental game and implement it into their programs. This way players can incorporate the mental aspects as they develop their skills.
